BMW has revealed the all-new BMW 5-Series GT Power eDrive at the Group Innovation Days 2014. The German prototype is offering a sneak peak into the upcoming future plug-in hybrid technology.
Under the hood of the new BMW 5-Series GT Power eDrive is a 2.0 liter turbocharged petrol unit and two electric motors. In total, the hybrid powertrain can offer 680 horsepower and 1.015 Nm peak of torque. One of the electric engines is mounted into the transmission while the second one is coupled to the rear axle.
The internal combustion engine works as a generator to recharge the 20 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. It will also help the system at full power when the driver ask this.
As a result, in the electric mode, the new BMW 5-Series GT Power eDrive can travel up to 100 kilometers. The total range offered by the German prototype is about 600 kilometers. For now this sounds pretty low but we should now forget that the 70 liters standard reservoir has been replaced with a 30 liters one in order to reduce the total weight.
